We gladly invite you to the second group exhibition created by curator-in-residence Sri Irodikromo. With this new exhibition titled Wi Alakondre, she continues the trajectory of the larger ALAKONDRE: A Space in Time project that runs at Readytex Art Gallery until the end of this year. At the same time, this exhibition is highly personal to Sri Irodikromo, because she created it mainly in honor of her father, artist Soeki Irodikromo who passed away two years ago. Alakondre was the absolute driving force behind the life and the art of the famous Soeki.
In Wi Alakondre there is an honorary spot for the bust of Soeki made by Erwin de Vries, yet another great Surinamese artist who is no longer amongst us. It is the first time that this sculpture will be shown to the public. In the exhibition, Sri Irodikromo also shows a number of portraits made of her father by several artists throughout the years, as well as several self-portraits. Furthermore, the exhibit also includes a special artwork by guest artist Peter Holman, created with multiple photographs from the life of Soeki Irodikromo. As ‘Local Master’ for Wi Alakondre, Sri chose Leo Wong Loi Sing, a colleague artist from the same generation and a good friend of her father’s. A beautiful selection of his work has been added to the display. Sri also shows an impressive blue ceramic sculpture by her father that she recently found in his home. Inspired by this find, she selected a diverse collection of artworks from the stock at Readytex Art Gallery, in which the color blue dominates. She purposely chose a few artworks that are not blue, thus interjecting a sense of playfulness and contrast. The additional artworks are by the artists John Lie A Fo, Kenneth Flijders, Kurt Nahar, Paul Chang, René Tosari, Rinaldo Klas, Roddney Tjon Poen Gie, Shaundell Horton, Sunil Puljhun and Sri herself. Wi Alakondre is a powerful and striking tribute to artist Soeki Irodikromo, who can be considered one of the founders of the Alakondre way of thinking in the visual arts.
Wi Alakondre opens in Readytex Art Gallery on Thursday September 8th, 2022, at 7:30 pm. On this evening you are welcome at the gallery from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm. The exhibition will be open until Saturday October 1st, during the regular opening hours of the gallery from Monday-Friday from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm and on Saturday from 8:30 am – 1:30 pm. Wi Alakondre will be a special exhibition in which we honor and commemorate a truly amazing artist. You are most welcome!
