‘HMMM…’ – THE WORLD OF KURT NAHAR
Readytex Art Gallery welcomes you to a special presentation of new work by Kurt Nahar, one of Suriname’s most distinctive contemporary artists.
Kurt Nahar invites you into his world. His installations transform one of the gallery’s spaces into a place filled with curious objects, symbols, colors, memories, and questions. Some are entirely new, while others combine older work with newly added objects. He challenges viewers to look beyond the obvious by combining everyday materials, found objects, text, paintings, and installations in unexpected ways. Some works may make you smile, others may surprise or even unsettle you. All of them invite you to think.
Among these works is the new installation 36x. It grew from one of Nahar’s characteristic observations about human behavior. With humor, irony, and a touch of mystery, the installation explores themes of desire, fantasy, belief, and the endless search for meaning. The artist’s own explanation is intentionally cryptic, leaving room for each visitor to discover their own interpretation.
As you move through the presentation, recurring elements appear throughout the space: numbers, ribbons, eyes, household objects, references to religion, relationships, and daily life. Connections emerge where you least expect them. Some works seem playful, while others touch on deeper questions about who we are and how we see the world.
Rather than offering clear answers, Nahar invites us to slow down, observe, wonder, and reflect. The presentation becomes a journey through the imagination of an artist who finds significance in the ordinary and reveals the extraordinary hidden within it.
Whether you are familiar with contemporary art or simply curious to discover something new, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to enter the thought-provoking world of Kurt Nahar.
