Faya Lobi: In search of identity, essence and meaning of life

Readytex Art Gallery is happy to invite you to a new solo exhibition by visual artist Dhiradj Ramsamoedj: Faya Lobi: In search of identity, essence and meaning of life. As with all his presentations, the artist once again offers you a stunning visual experience, inspired by Suriname, its people, heritage and spiritual wealth.

This time he works on a vast scale: a painting measuring 5.65 by 2.80 meters, an installation of 50 maurs (wedding crowns), and a sculpture of about 2 meters high. Each work articulates its own narrative within the Surinamese context, supported by a thoroughly considered conceptual framework. The growing division in Surinamese society and the lack of reaching out to one another to jointly strive for a better future deeply affect Ramsamoedj. He puts it this way: “We are a small country, we have so much, yet we lack unity. What, then, does our future look like?” His works speak of the cultural heritage we must cherish and through which we can connect. With his art, he strives for that unity. Not by providing answers, but by inviting reflection on the question itself. His works encourage viewers to discover how they can personally contribute to a positive future for the nation, one in which unity binds its people.

Just as Suriname is complex, so too are his works. The painting Fragments of Suriname: A Portrait of the Self has many layers, each telling about our heritage, history, diversity, rituals and much more. Perhaps these are the riches in which we may find our unity? The sculpture Hands of Solidarity refers to what we need to achieve that unity. And in the installation Project Maur, Ramsamoedj uses the maur, a wedding crown with a special ritual meaning to connect with the diverse cultures within Surinamese society.

The exhibition is on display from Monday, November 10, 2025, through Saturday, January 3, 2026, Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
