We are thrilled to invite you to the opening of the captivating duo exhibition by Sri Irodikromo and Steven Towirjo at Readytex Art Gallery: Batik Reimagined. Where tradition meets innovation.
This unique collaboration began unexpectedly when Steven and his wife showed up a week early for a dinner with friends at Sri’s home in December 2023. During their time together, Sri invited Steven to join her solo exhibition, thus transforming it into this exciting duo showcase.
Sri Irodikromo masterfully blends traditional batik motifs with innovative techniques. She incorporates earthy hues and natural materials like clay (including pemba), charcoal and mahogany extract into her works. Her pieces often feature wayang figures, Javanese-inspired patterns, and other elements from Suriname’s diverse cultures, such as Maroon gourd carvings and Indigenous frog symbols. Sri’s experimental approach includes tearing and loosely stitching her works back together, and playing with contrasts of light and dark. Drawing inspiration from a variety of batik motifs as well as early batik’s indigo, Sri transforms tradition into contemporary art.
Steven Towirjo brings a fresh perspective to batik through ceramics. His works are an intuitive exploration of form and texture, often inspired by his Javanese heritage and the diversity of cultures in Suriname. Batik-inspired motifs are transformed by Steven into dynamic and abstract shapes. His large-scale installation, Water in the Sky, evokes the fluidity of clouds, while his Uma series celebrates the diversity of Surinamese women. His use of earthy hues and intricate patterns invites viewers to discover something new with every glance.
Together, Sri and Steven create a dialogue between tradition and innovation, showcasing the endless possibilities of batik as a source of inspiration for contemporary art.
