From Paramaribo to New York: Surinamese Voices Resonate in Amazonia Açu
We are proud and excited to announce that works by Surinamese artists Sri Irodikromo, Shaundell Horton, Dánasion Akobe, and Lola Ankarapi—all affiliated with Readytex Art Gallery and Readytex Crafts—have been selected for the exhibition Amazonia Açu in New York. Organized by the Americas Society, the exhibition features work by artists from nine Pan-Amazonian countries.
Chief Curator of Art, Aimé Iglesias Lukin, was assisted by a special committee of co-curators, each representing one of the countries. We are delighted that Miguel Keerveld, an artist and curator connected to our gallery, was honored with this role for Suriname.
The title Amazonia Açu—where Açu means ‘large’ or ‘expanded’ in Tupi-Guaraní—refers to the immense scope of the region: its geography, biodiversity, and the multitude of communities with their diverse cultures. Featuring over 50 contemporary artworks, Amazonia Açu offers a kaleidoscopic overview of the Amazon’s cultural, aesthetic, and material wealth. The exhibition seeks to break down stereotypical and one-dimensional views of the region, placing the discourse about the region in a contemporary context.
The exhibition will be on view from September 3, 2025, to April 18, 2026, at Americas Society in New York. If you have the opportunity, we highly recommend visiting this beautiful and thought-provoking collection.
