Dear art lovers,
It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the festive opening of Lobi Pasi | impressions of a journey, the new solo exhibition by Reinier Asmoredjo, on Saturday, November 7 at Readytex Art Gallery. Reinier takes you through the streets of Paramaribo: a colourful impression of daily life, then and now. He shows you his personal interpretation of Surinamese society, with cultural diversity, change, resilience and progress as central themes.
For more than four decades, Asmoredjo has been developing his own, immediately recognisable visual language. With powerful colours, flowing lines, stylised figures and rhythmic compositions, he transforms everyday observations into images with a deeper meaning. His paintings move between recognisable reality and imagination, between personal memory and shared experience.
Inspired by his observations of city life, in which women with their daily labour form a familiar face in the economic and social dynamics, Reinier developed the recurring motif of the Maroon woman carrying her merchandise on her head. These women embody independence, care, resilience and the will to move forward, amid the changes that Suriname is undergoing. With them he also portrays Mama Sranan, a maternal symbol of unity in diversity; she loves all Surinamese regardless of origin, culture or religion. In this way his art transcends a purely ethnic conception of identity and shows Suriname as a shared living world.
Recurring suns, circles, birds and organic forms bring movement, rhythm and coherence to his compositions and evoke associations with life energy, freedom and development. Moreover, it is not only the subjects that carry meaning: the expressive power of his work arises precisely in the interaction between form, colour and composition.
Characteristic of Asmoredjo is his positive outlook: amid change and challenges, he consciously focuses on human dignity, connectedness and beauty. With Lobi Pasi | impressions of a journey he invites you to look anew at the everyday and to see how familiar images, through his eyes, acquire deeper meaning and become part of our cultural memory.
You and your guests are warmly welcome on Saturday, November 7 at Readytex Art Gallery. Doors open at 19:00 and the opening begins at 19:30. Afterwards, the exhibition can be viewed from Monday, November 9, 2026 to Saturday, January 9, 2027, from Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:30 and on Saturday from 08:30 to 13:30.
