Roddney Tjon Poen Gie participation in Forest Art Guyane, French Guiana
After hopefully a wonderful years end and a promising start of the new year to all, at Readytex Art Gallery we have transitioned into 2018 with many good intentions and great plans in mind. We kick them off with our first Thursday-Night-Feature (TNF) on Thursday January 4th. On this evening visual artist Roddney Tjon Poen Gie will give a presentation about his participation in ‘Forest‘ Art Guyane 2017’ in Saint-Laurent du Maroni, French Guiana, in November 2017.
During this project in a national forest, various artists transformed 7 fallen or dead trees into artistic public art installations, inspired by the theme ‘Libi makandra’ (Living together). As the only non-Frenchspeaking artist, Tjon Poen Gie worked on a horizontally positioned Wakapou (Brown heart) trunk of more than 6 meters long and between 40-50 centimeters in diameter, during the entire week. In it he sculpted two figures with their backs against each other, thereby symbolizing that the two neighboring countries Suriname and French Guiana ‘should have each others back’.
