“ IN MY MIND’S EYE “
On Friday November 13th Readytex Art Gallery opens the solo exhibition ‘In my mind’s eye’ from visual artist Dhiradj Ramsamoedj. An exhibition rife with color and narrative, intriguing, mysterious, critical, now and then somewhat mocking, but above all quite extraordinary. The artist’s view of the world around him, as he sees it inside his head, in his thoughts, …. ‘in his mind’s eye’.
Dhiradj Ramsamoedj finds inspiration in his surroundings, in the world around him, and in current events and incidents that occur throughout. The sometimes so questionable morals and ethics of humans, regarding personal, political as well as social subjects, are themes the artist is constantly preoccupied with. With his art Ramsamoedj raises critical questions, exposes controversial situations and challenges the viewer to discover the deeper meaning behind his enigmatic imagery. Characteristic in that imagery are the human figures with strangely shaped heads, a deliberate distortion, which according to the artist, refers to the complex and mysterious nature of mankind. But whereas in his previous work the oddly shaped heads held no expression, those in the new collection do manifest some level of facial expression, some emotion: A frown, a smile, a smirk. With his new work Ramsamoedj seems to gradually lay a bit more of the soul of his subjects bare. They look slightly more human, but not completely.
In a diverse, but meticulously chosen color palette, sometimes in oils and sometimes in acrylic paint, Ramsamoedj touches upon subjects ranging from corruption, deception and oppression, to pollution and deforestation, and even to love and relationships. More than forty paintings, all done in the same size, but visually extremely diverse. With themes that are sometimes easy to read, at other times more of a riddle, and in some instances open to a variety of interpretations. With the paintings in ‘In my minds eye’ the more discerning viewer is offered a privileged look into the brain of Dhiradj Ramsamoedj. He or she may then attempt to unravel the workings of the mind within… not an easy thing to do successfully, but the discussions that it will unearth, will be just as interesting as the works of art themselves.
