We gladly take you along on an artistic adventure that we are going on with Curator-in-Residence Miguel Keerveld, starting this month. Our journey begins on Friday October 8th with the opening of LUNAR, an exhibition that serves as the official kick-off of a larger year-long project titled ALAKONDRE: A space in time. Setting the stage for this interesting art project, LUNAR will showcase conceptual art installations created by Kurt Nahar, Sri Irodikromo, Sunil Puljhun and Shaundell Horton. A special detail of the project is that each exhibition will include some work of ‘Local Masters’. LUNAR will show artworks by Erwin de Vries and Lilian Abegg.
With this project we actually continue on the trajectory of our artistic explorations and conversations with Alida Neslo about the role of ‘Alakondre’ in Surinamese art, and about our goal to participate in critical international exhibitions and biennials. In that regard, the curious and creative mind of curator and artist Miguel Keerveld is a very welcome addition.
For Miguel the collaboration is also important because it is part of his DAS Graduate School research program at the Amsterdam University of the Arts. It also offers him the opportunity to gain valuable experience on his path towards becoming a recognized art curator. For the gallery the project fulfills a need to explore new possibilities and to take her artistic productions to a higher level with curatorial concepts that trigger and challenge both the viewer and the artist.
From November 2021 thru November 2022, Miguel will guide the continually rotating group of artists and co-curators who will participate in the various exhibitions and/or art manifestations, in a process of dialogue and research into the deeper nuances of identification, inclusion and diversity, and the possible forms of curatorship in the context of Suriname. According to Miguel: “The project title ALAKONDRE: a space in time, is used in a performative sense and refers to a fusion of the past, the present and the future; an event that symbolically disassembles a space of power and reassembles it as a space of strength”.
In the exhibition/art manifestation LUNAR the emphasis is on symbolical and mystical objects and elements related to the strength of the feminine, cosmology, numerology, and a deep and meaningful exploration into spirituality and community. It is particularly intriguing to see how the four artists each deal with this fascinating theme in their own unique ways. It is an exhibition that you must not miss!
LUNAR is on display in Readytex Art Gallery from Friday October 8th thru Saturday October 30th 2021. Due to the Covid-restrictions there will not be an opening reception, but you are most welcome during our regular opening hours from Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, and on Saturday from 8:30 am – 1:30 pm.
