Double-feature: Humphrey Tawjoeram and Paul Chang

Starting on the 16th of December in the Readytex Art Gallery, is a new special double-feature in which the work of two fine artists from Surinamese origins will be highlighted. Humphrey Tawjoeram working and living in Suriname and Paul Chang working and living in the USA. In their work both artists show a strong affinity for nature and landscapes inspired by their home country Suriname, but that is where the similarities end. The collections in the double-feature are a selection of artworks created by the artists over the past two years.
Humphrey Tawjoeram
The paintings by Humphrey Tawjoeram are as we have learned to expect from him, abstract. Although Tawjoeram has been known to experiment with different styles from time to time, his preferred style is still clearly abstraction. The artist applies his acrylic paint to his canvas in small thick planes with a palette knife, ultimately creating a fascinating mosaic-like image. This typical way of working as well as his recognizable main color palette in cool shades of blues, grays and purples, have currently become the trademark of this artist. The main color scheme is intermittently relieved with strong, bright punches of color which form a surprising contrast against the softer background. With his unique style the artist is capable of creating interesting abstract compositions in which the chosen theme is rendered upon the canvas in a creative manner. He challenges the viewer to search the compounded composites for identifiable elements. In this double-feature the theme so cleverly disguised in the abstract paintings are beautiful natural landscapes. In some pieces, in particular in the older less abstracted paintings, the theme is easier identified, while in the more recent, more abstract works the theme is more subtly disguised.
Paul Chang
In the work by Paul Chang landscapes are depicted in totally different manner. The art of Chang is combination of figurative and semi-abstract styles in which elements from nature consequently form the main feature of the work. The artist has been living in the USA for many years now, but says that he still gets his inspiration from the flora and fauna of his old home country Suriname. This inexhaustible theme is the subject on which the artist gives his creative spirit and experimental urges free reign. The color palette consists of mainly warm autumn-like hues and the result is a collection of paintings which exude a dreamy and peaceful, tropical atmosphere. The different aspects from nature such as trees, flowers, plants, water and horses or birds, are portrayed in acrylic paint on canvas in his own unique style. For the main part, the works in the collection of Paul Chang in this double-feature are Giclée prints (high quality reproductions on canvas which come extremely close to the original work and are printed in a limited quantity). Each print is touched up by hand by the artist.
