| The art of Kenneth Flijders is
usually inspired by the beautiful Surinamese nature and the everyday things
that are a part of life in our diverse society. He is especially inspired by
the unique way of togetherness and living with each other, of enjoying and
participating in each other’s traditions, and as is highlighted in this work,
of each other’s culinary delights. On one side Kenneth paints a
large self-portrait, with which he clearly indicates that all elements of the
different cultures are a part of him as well. And that in Suriname, the various
dishes don’t belong to just one group, but they are all part of our varied
Surinamese cuisine. Our ‘sranan nyan’! Prepared by many and especially, eaten
by all. That is what the colorful hands in the work tell us as well. But the
hands also symbolize that all Surinamese citizens must roll up their sleeves
and work on the development of our country.
