Spirituality, Sexuality and Passion
Basic human urges provocatively brought to life in wooden sculptures.
Starting on the 24th of July the spotlight in the Readytex Art Gallery will be directed on one of Suriname’s great sculptors Armand Masé. For a period of four weeks the beautiful wooden sculptures of this great artist will receive well deserved special attention within the cozy atmosphere of the exhibition space of the gallery.
The artwork of Armand Masé is the second organized mini feature in the gallery (after that of John Lie A Fo the past few weeks), and is with its large assortment of striking and often sexually charged sculptures a definite must see.
Armand Masé has been a sculptor for over 30 years and although he has always greatly admired classical sculptors such as Michel Angelo and da Vinci, he has very clearly developed his own style. With his fascinating, completely handmade wooden sculptures of ardent embraces between lovers seemingly in the throes of passion, the artist repeatedly manages to captivate and enthrall his audience. Love within the family, between mother and child, man and woman and the spiritual role of the eagle, are several subjects regularly brought to life by this impassioned sculptor. As an artist he expertly manages to create an intimate and emotional mood with his art and of all viewers only few will remain unaffected by it. The “sexually tinted” sculptures are rather provocative and suggestive and the more timid among the viewers may find themselves taken a bit by surprise.
Each sculpture has its own unique character and the assortment varies from large sculptures of for example that of a impassioned naked woman playing a drum, a mother lovingly breastfeeding her baby, erotically entwined couples in complete ecstasy, to more abstract sculptures of flowing rounded shapes which seem to flow in and over each other in an intriguing fashion. According to the artist each work of art has a deeper, spiritual meaning for him which is incorporated in each sculpture in a very subtle fashion.
With the desired design in mind, the artist follows the character of the piece of wood in front of him. The result is never massive and always captivating partly because each side of the sculpture has its own charm. The sculptures by Armand Masé are admirable from every direction and truly unique from each separate dimension.
In addition to being a sculptor Armand Masé is also a musician, singer and writer of songs and poetry. It is his expertise as a visual artist which will be highlighted in the Readytex Art Gallery from July 24th until august the 21th.
Spirituality, sexuality and passion … basic human needs and urges artistically hewn out of beautiful Surinamese wood. That is the essence of the work done by this tremendous artist.
