Dear friends
and art and culture lovers,
We hereby
invite you to join us at Readytex Art Gallery on Saturday November 10th, for a
presentation by our guest Walther Tjon Pian Gi, about his photo book Between
Heaven and Earth – sacred and ritual dances from Bali. In a presentation which
will include photos, videos, and very short dance demonstrations, Walther Tjon
Pian Gi will elaborate upon the theme of his photo book about the sacred,
ritual and trance dances of Bali, and the context within which they are performed.
He combines his in-depth knowledge and experience of 40 years, not in the least
as a temple dancer dedicated by the Balinese, with a unique, personal and
anthropological way of photographing. He was also given the unique opportunity
to take photos in places where outsiders are prohibited from entering. He
highlights a fascinating dance world behind which a unique culture is the
driving force for its survival despite the eroding forces of mass tourism.
After studying
Civil Engineering at TU Delft, Walther Tjon Pian Gi (Paramaribo, 1947) studied
modern dance in New York and Balinese dance in Bali. He danced regularly at
temple festivals in Bali. He is specialized in Topeng Pajegan, a solo dance
drama in which the dancer chooses from approximately 20 masks to tell a story.
He was a member of the well-known theatre company Dogtroep in the Netherlands,
secretary of the ‘Nederlandse Fonds voor de Podiumkunsten’ and
operational/financial director of ‘Multiculturele Televisie Nederland’. The presentation of Walther Tjon Pian Gi
in Readytex Art Gallery on Saturday November 10th starts at 11:00 am.
