Dhiradj Ramsamoedj is a creative and driven young artist who is gradually yet steadily leaving his mark on the growing Surinamese art scene. He keeps expanding his boundaries and is continually on the lookout for new challenges, but it is truly his vision, his ideology and the carefully conceived concepts, that determine the strength of his creations. His paintings have always dealt mostly with ordinary people during various everyday activities, but the depth of his subject matter, his style and technique have developed along with his experience and exposure in the art world. His work is no longer as realistic and he currently creates primarily impulsive, contrast rich compositions in acrylics as well as oils. Lines and shade effects, especially in black, accentuated against a background of bright colors, are also new developments. None of these changes, choices or developments are however random. Dhiradj is a thinker with a purposeful analytical mind, who works from carefully designed concepts which he diligently works out in sketch books. The mysterious looking people with the strangely shaped heads, a characteristic feature in the art by Ramsamoedj, are a prime example of his highly conceptualized working methods. His thoughts about the mysterious character of man, the hidden inner motivation which is not always positive in nature and which greatly influence human behavior, have resulted in these peculiar, strangely shaped heads. Dhiradj is also well known for his mixed media three dimensional art installations inspired by various social and environmental themes. Early in 2010 at the Paramaribo SPAN exhibition of the DSB Bank he gained quite a bit of attention for the Adjie Gilas installation he created in his grandmother’s house. Later in this same year during his second solo exhibition Ordinary People Reloaded he further expands upon those designs and ideas and comes out with an even stronger, more colorful, expressive and creative collection of two- and three dimensional art.
