1987 First Prize Exhibition Nieuw Rotterdam's Peil Art Gallery. Right after graduating from the Rotterdam Academy Visual Art Ilene Themen participated in an art contest for which she was awarded first prize by a professional jury which in cluded the former director of the Van Gogh Museum Drs. Ch.E. van blommenstein. The jury characterized her work as "refreshingly creative, convincing and full of dynamics".
1988 Exhibition Central Hotel Rotterdam. "...This was something new. Something you could recognize without having to identify yourself with the images on canvas. With her work Ilene can be positioned on the crossroad between two cultures, the Western-Eiropean and the Afro-American."(Suriname weekly)
1989 Exhibition De Bruin The Hague "...Part of her work is clearly focused on exploration of her own cultural roots. She paints stylized, beautifully decorated figures, who strongly remind us of African sculptures...Of quite a different character is a series of collage on a narrow and tall format, which is more or less dictated by the depicted human figures. The striking thing about these figures is that they are built around torn pieces of children drawing."(The Hague Daily)
1993 Exhibition Woman in Vusual Art Foundation Amsterdam "...It is clear that Themen does not fit the cliche image of the Caribbean artist who paints sun splashed beaches, palm trees and cheerful tropical sceneries...Her work includes beautiful paintings with abstract female figures, lonely or in groups, apparently depicting a mysterious secret.(Marie-Claire Fakkel)
